The Amanda D. Lotz interview
As part of our video on TV streaming, Sabrina interviewed Amanda D. Lotz, a professor at Queensland University of Technology in Australia, and highly-influential television scholar.
This conversation was absolutely full of information that we didnāt have room for in the video. For example, did you know that in the early days of television, cable companies were actually the underdogs?
In the United States, early cable companies existed just to serve people in hard-to-reach areas that couldnāt get conventional broadcast signals (like rural areas in the mountains). There were policies that prevented them from targeting big population hubs and city centres, thanks to aggressive lobbying by the broadcast giants.
The rules didnāt change until the 1980s, and the market exploded (from 22% of all American homes up to 60%).
But possibly the most interesting part of the interview came at the end of our conversation. It was about the role content creators (like us!) are playing in the changing TV landscape. It was out of the scope of the video but we really recommend you give it a listen!
